Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The platformization process of contemporary society, as described by the authors who named it so (van Dijck, Poell, and de Waal 2018) has introduced, in the social context, forms of selection and access to content that integrate algorithmic logics, human moderation and activities of platform users. The sociological theory of cultural processes has often focused, even in pre-digital times, on how the evolution of the media system is accompanied by an evolution of access and circulation of cultural products and how this contributes to the formation of imaginaries and of knowledge. The study and critical analysis of some phenomena such as the development of an algorithmic culture, which also involves the processes of construction of the narrative, have further highlighted that the processes of selection are crucial, both in the shared narrative of the contemporary world and in the processes of formation of the imaginary. The crucial nature of these processes makes their study important and urgent, as well as the definition of the most suitable research and analysis methodologies. The great availability of data (big data) made possible by platforms certainly constitutes an opportunity, especially in the face of the willingness of platforms to share them for scientific research purposes. An opportunity that must be seized by also considering the possibility of integrating big and small data into the analysis. The chapter intends to focus on the potential of research through data (big and small) for the reconstruction of the forms of algorithmic narration that characterize the contemporary world and contribute to shaping its imagination and forms of expression.
