Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The cult of the dead is a theme that lends itself to multiple readings ranging from plural eschatological visions to socio-anthropological, philosophical, historical, as well as theological intersections. The volume, starting from an agile reconstruction of this cultural substrate, analyzes the legal discipline of the right to burial, its systems and spaces, as well as funeral rites, in religious systems (especially Islamic, Jewish and canonical) and in state order. The cult of the dead thus offers a paradigmatic starting point for reflecting on the contents and method of managing the multiple aspects that concern the recognition and protection of individual and collective religious freedom in contemporary plural societies. Issues that in the contingent emergency phase, due to the measures aimed at containing the COVID-19 pandemic, have assumed an unprecedented and unexplored connotation, transforming themselves into a sort of stress test for the protection of religious and religious freedom (including the dead) between the balance of rights and religious pluralism to which an in-depth final reflection is dedicated.
