[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume offers a unitary reconstruction of the history of Euboea, which currently lacks, through the essays of various scholars, who consider the primary role played in archaic colonization, the close relationship of alliance and / or subordination woven with Athens during the V century, the attempt to play a more autonomous role during the fourth century, through the formation of an Euboean league, between Athens, Thebes and Macedonia, and finally the events of the Roman age. What emerges is the picture of an important geopolitical area on the strategic and economic level, suspended between the maritime and continental vocation, between the great colonial past and the role of second level in which it was later relegated.
