Abstract
The difficult order of the texts in the Canzoniere offers an ethical evaluation of the author himself on his work. Even the tangential meta-poetic compositions and the numeral symbolism contribute towards this. This, however, implies Petrarch’s awareness of the unitary nature of his text, in contradiction with his explicit allusions to its fragmentation, which culminate in the elimination of the lexeme liber from the title in the Chigi codex. The ostracism is explicitly directed to the competing model of vulgar book, Dante’s Vita Nova, structurally antithetic to the subsequent Petrarchan ideal. This ideally can be well summed up in the Song to the Virgin Mary, which is even from a lexical point of view the counterpart to St. Bernard’s prayer in Paradise XXXIII.
