Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay considers the recent evolution of the welfare systems of the so-called developed countries, a true crossroads of the relations between economy, society and institutions, and examines the challenges posed by a welfare state that will have to change radically if it wants to continue to be universalistic, offering to all a level of well-being not too dissimilar from that to which we have been accustomed for more than half a century.
