Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Through the analysis of unpublished writings, interventions and notes, preserved in Giuseppe Camadini's personal archive, the essay identifies the relevance - in the perspective of the Brescian notary - of the concern to rethink an effective presence of Catholics in Italian society, in a climate history that has put old instruments of intervention out of action. Starting from this concern, Camadini rethinks the history of Catholicism in Brescia between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - a "heritage" from which to start again with "creative commitment" -, distancing himself from those who used the past to fuel internal dialectics in the Catholic world of the second twentieth century, when alternative party identities were opposed, for Camadini connoted by fundamentalism both on the right and on the left. The real dynamics of the history of Catholic Brescia, from the times of Giuseppe Tovini up to the mid-twentieth century, seem to him distant from the interpretation of those who - in Brescian Christian Democrat circles and in historiography itself - have underlined a gap, unfounded for Camadini, between the line of Tovini and the Montinian legacy. Instead, it seems useful to the Brescian notary to highlight the elements that characterize the Brescian model, marked by a faith embodied in everyday life and alien to intimism and ideology, which has proposed real alternatives at the level of socio-economic relations and the social and cultural promotion of the population.
