Abstract

Tirarsi su le brache da soli (Pulling up one’s pants). Calvino, Pavese, and an unpublished letter to Enzo Noè Girardi (1951). On September 25, 1951, Italo Calvino sent to Enzo Noè Girardi a still unpublished letter, now preserved in the Fondo Girardi (Girardi Fund), at the Library of the Catholic University of Milan. The short text reflects on two articles by Girardi about Cesare Pavese, published the same year in «Vita e Pensiero». It allows to reconstruct the way Calvino and the Einaudi publishing house have built and protected the memory of the writer, as well as the dialogue established by Calvino himself with the intellectuals of the Catholic world, in particular during his collaboration with the periodical «Cultura e realtà».
