Thomas Aquinas on Categories

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Thomas Aquinas did not systematically deal with categories nor composed commentaries on Aristotle's Categories, despite having annotated several Aristotle’s texts. His opinion, however, can be obtained from his writings. To understanding Aquinas ' opinion about the categories we must take as a basis the notion of ens, the concept logically first.Underlying the derivation of the categories of Thomas there is the affirmation of an isomorphism between language and reality: different modes of predication reflect different modes in which the being itself is created, or according to the language of Thomas, different modi essendi .
