Abstract
Echoing Eric Hobsbawm's "the short century", the more than 200 years stretching in the Middle East from Napoleon's expedition to Egypt until today can be defined as "the long century of Islam". It is in this tortuous path, in its false starts and dead ends, that one has to look for alternatives to the wave of violence that is currently sweeping the region.
