Abstract

AgrowingnumberofCompaniesisnowadayscommittedtoevaluatetheimpactoftheirproduction,drivenbydifferentforcesasthegrowingdemandforgreenproductsbythemarketandthepressurefromtheInstitutionsinpromotingamoresustainableproductionandconsumptionmodel.\r\nEnvironmentalassessmentandcommunicationarestrictlyrelated.Aproperenvironmentalcommunicationstrategyisnecessarytoallowmoreinformedchoicesandtoencouragethegrowthofa"greenmarket".\r\nConsideringthatinEuropethefoodsectoraccountsfor20%-30%ofallenvironmentalimpactsfromconsumptions(ESTOandIPTS,2006),consciousproductschoicescanleadtoasignificantreductionoftheenvironmentalpressurecausedbythissector.\r\nConsideringtheexpansionofthegreenmarketandthegrowingimportanceofenvironmentalinformationinthefoodsector,in2012theEnvironmentalLabelforfoodwasbornbytheinitiativeoftheItalianConsultancyCompanySPRIMandtheInstituteofAgrarianandEnvironmentalChemistryoftheUniversitàCattolicadelSacroCuore(Piacenza,Italy).\r\nThelabel,simpletounderstandbyconsumers,hasbeendesignedtobeplaceddirectlyonfoodpackaging,inordertoallowcomparisonbetweenproductsand,consequently,tosupportmoreinformedchoices.Areportaboutthecalculationisavailableonthewebsite.
