Abstract
The essay develops an analysis of contemporary cinema and of american TV series focusing on the importance the antagonist and the villain have in the construction of drama. Specifically, the First Chapter goes deep into the dramatic function of the antagonist and into the evolution of the hero becoming a more complex character; Chapter Two concentrates on the evolution of the antagonist in some recent films; Chapter Three and Chapter Four, thorugh specific case studies, deal respectively with the dark side of the hero in animated features and with the antiheroes in american TV drama.
