Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] the article proposes the interpretative edition of two very important texts contained in the instrumental code of the Disciplini di San Cristoforo of Brescia (Bresciam Historical Archive hospital fund, Bonelli, envelope 99): the first, completely unpublished, is a Planctus Virginis Mariae, followed from a Sententia finalis iudicii. Both constitute, together with the Passio published by Contini in 1935, a cohesive and orderly group that gathers in a real paraliturgical office for Holy Thursday; far from being a mere laudistic anthology, the three texts (Passio, Planctus and Sententia) constitute the three moments of the same liturgical-devotional action, which show a very high relevance, at once religious, historical, cultural and literary ; they also have a great linguistic interest, since they confirm, and to a certain extent widen, the institutive data of the linguistic canon of the Brescia vernacular between the end of the fourteenth century and the first ones of the fifteenth century, providing significant materials of examination useful for a comparison with the language of the other texts, already known, of the code. This paper provides, in addition to the interpretative edition of the two texts based on conservative criteria (given their nature of language monuments), a historical-theatrological study that identifies the function of the texts, their internal relationships and their performative destination within the confraternity ceremonies, followed by a dialectological study that compares the results of the linguistic examination conducted on the new textual emergencies with that masterfully prepared for the Passio and prose prayers by Gianfranco Contini in 1935.
