Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The purpose of these pages is to present in the most succinct way possible some reflections that arose during the period in which this volume was formed. The answers provided by the authors reconfirmed my conviction that economic theory cannot be conceived as a form of social engineering, that is, a science that designs and plans ex ante the ways in which society and the economy must function. On the contrary, the economic one is a discipline that should help the society to 'perform experiments towards itself'. These experiments should aim to design policies and economic institutions that produce the highest standard of living for all compatible with the requirements of equality, freedom and respect for the dignity of others.
