Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

This article sets up a relationship among time, media, and identity attempting to carry out a synthetic and oriented review of several theoretical contributions concerning with time dimensions within the media experience interpreting it as one of the forces or sources that, either individually or collectively, helps to integrate the self, both concerning the continuity of the time flow evolving and (as perception of self, as biography and as projects), and on the complementary one of interaction (in the forms of mutual belonging, rather than mutually keeping distance) with the others. With reference to electronic media time, the author means three different things in this perspective: their regular time flow; their memory-oriented texts; the perception of past, present and future in connection with their technologies. Throughout the article he tries to show how personal identity is supported in its need for ontological security by the routine scheduling of media; how the — group or national — collective identity makes references to a social agenda and to a common story which are both roots and outgrowth of broadcasting programmes; how personal and collective identities build themselves a self integrating each others even relying on biographical materials originated by media; how multiple choices giving and apparently simple, weaker, or reliant structure to modern identity, have to cope with multiple possible present which can be perceived thanks to simultaneous media communication; how the reversible identification processes are related to a time perception similar to that of the media, based on the present possibilities, to the detriment of future projects.
