Abstract
A key-concept in social sciences since WWII, development has often been identified merely with economic growth. This reductionist view has now been superseded by one that emphasises the necessity to place the person with his or her own needs - not just material one - and aspirations at the centre of development processes. The many contributions of the SDC to this perspective, after the reflection started with Populorum Progressio, have found a moment of synthesis in the concept of human development.
