Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay constitutes the introduction to the entire volume and presents the state of the work of the research project on the history of education in Italy between the 18th and 19th centuries. In particular we examine the methodological aspects of the research, with reference both to the most up-to-date historiographical tendencies, and also to the particularity of the questions related to the collection of quantitative data and to the serial cartographic representation. Some lines of interpretation are also focused on the comparative analysis of the school systems of the states of the ancient regime, the formation of the so-called "chain of studies", gender education (male and female), public education and private.
