Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Although the name of Ephorus is included in the so-called canon of Greek historians, very little is known of his biography, so much so that only five seem to be the information deducible from the tradition: 1) Ephorus was originally from Cuma eolica; 2) lived between 400 and 330 BC; 3) was a contemporary of Theopompus; 4) was, like Theopompus, 'pupil' of Isocrates; 5) refused to participate in Alexander's expedition against the Persian Empire. On this basis, all the documentation that has come down to us is re-examined, in a tight comparison also with a series of news relating to the historical Theopompus of Chios, whose name is usually associated with that of Ephorus.
