Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] In this article we have tried to detail the singular case of the presence in the church of Santa Croce in Florence of a funeral monument made by Tino di Camaino for Gastone della Torre (died in Florence in 1318): a prelate of Milanese origin, who does not have , as far as we know, links with the Florentine clergy, and that in the Tuscan city had died of a pure fatality, falling from a horse during a journey that should have taken him to Aquileia. This article demonstrates the historical inconsistency of the news, created in the modern age, of a commissioning the monument to report to the Florentine Barucci family, and proposes to read the story of its execution in a pro-Angevin political context, advancing the hypothesis that the interest for the burial of Gastone della Torre - a character that could easily be considered as a sort of excellent martyr of the Guelph cause - could be gained within the Tuscan city authorities. In Santa Croce (a chiesastic location consistent with the pro-Guelph climate in which the commission of the sepulcher had to take place) the monument was soon to be found within that extraordinary work of pictorial redevelopment of the naves which had Giotto, Taddeo Gaddi and Maso di Banco. The present study concludes with the consideration of the monument in this decorative context, and in the final part - following a careful observation of the surviving parts of the sepulcher and the activity of Maso di Banco on the wall that received the monument - a formulation is formulated hypothesis on the times in which this important pictorial campaign had to take place and be completed.
