[Autom. eng. transl.] In the first part the contribution recomposes in a single framework the numerous elements that the critics have gathered in the last century regarding Manzoni's knowledge of German and adds some clues that emerged from the recent Manzoni literary edition, all evidence among the 1920s and 1940s In the second part, a often neglected observation by Manfredi Porena is re-proposed, according to which Manzoni had to know German already in the first decade of the nineteenth century, and therefore even before drafting tragedies: to Porena's arguments, the author adds further details through the analysis of the A Parteneide verses and a passage from the Aesthetic Materials, in support of a thesis that could legitimize a new perspective from which to look at the relations between Manzoni and German culture.
