Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The coping construct is recognized as being of fundamental importance for understanding the consequences of stressful life events on the psycho-physical well-being of the individual. Nevertheless, there is little consensus on the conceptualization and measurement of the so-called coping modalities, that is the behavioral / cognitive responses that individuals put in place to manage stress. A first problem is therefore that of defining a hierarchical structure of the construct, or a coherent set of categories that organize the coping modalities based on their functions of mediating the effects of stress. A second problem concerns the relationship, of inclusion or not, between coping and emotional regulation. This research addresses these two questions. Sample: 416 university students (age: M = 21.6; DS = 3.01; 68.5% F) from different faculties. Tools: Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced (COPE); Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). Confirmative factor analyzes (MPLUS) 1) of each sub-scale were carried out; 2) of a model with inclusion of all subscales without over-ordered factors; 3) of a model with inclusion of 5 over-ordered factors derived from the literature: Emotional Regulation, Engagement Coping, divided into Focus on the Problem and Focus on Emotion, Disengagement Coping. The model without inclusion of over-ordered factors shows the highest fit indices, χ2 (2772) = 4792.71, p <.001, CFI = .850, RMSEA = .042, RMSEA CI = .040 -044. The Cognitive Reassessment is associated with Positive Reinterpretation and Active Coping, the Expressive Containment inhibition, and negatively with Relief and Social Support. Emotional regulation strategies are differently associated with coping strategies but not overlapping them.
