Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] This manual provides an overview of ancient Greek historiography from its origins to the Greek historians of the Imperial Roman age. The book is completed by a first introductory chapter, which addresses fundamental issues such as the birth of historiography, the use of documents, the figure of the historian in antiquity, dating systems and method problems; a chapter dedicated to memorials, biography, geographic literature and chronography; and a final focus on Luciano di Samosata's operetta How should history be written, the only treatise of this kind to have come down to us. Accompanying some maps and chronological tables help the student to orient himself and retrace the main events of Greek history.
