Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The study of audiences has seen the whole history of cinema research as a continuous bass. Background theme, accessory compared to an analysis focused on the film: on its authors, on its contents, on its aesthetics, on its functioning. in short, the viewer was always behind the scholar's back: attentive to what was happening on the screen, but much less to those who crowded (up to a certain point at least) the rooms. from this liminal position, the reflection on the cinema audience has gained an unprecedented importance in recent years. More the cinema device, understood as a technological apparatus and as a set of texts and fruition practices, moved away from the classical canon, the more scholars addressed the viewer, the only element of the formula to remain, if not stable, at least identifiable. here is a flourishing in the last years of research on cinema audiences: the western ones, which are already beginning to work in the eighties, thanks to the revisionist turn of historical research in the cinematographic field, and the non-western ones, towards which the perspectives of the world history; the spectators who still go to the theater and those who watch films on television or on their laptop screens; the spectators of the past and those of today. the number 1/2018 of 'cinema and history' is dedicated precisely to this theme: neglected for a long time, today the subject of an energetic recovery that makes it a field of experimentation with methods, readings and approaches. the essays contained here offer a precious cross-section of sensitivities, objects and historical research techniques on cinema audiences. the Free Style section completes the magazine with a conversation with Ermanno Olmi, an essay on the musical, one on the history factory and one on the Roman dialect in cinema; in addition to the cinema and editorial reports of the last season.
