Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume is divided into three parts, consisting of two themes each. The first concerns the formation of the geographical-political concept of Lombardy in the Middle Ages and is followed by a discussion on the demographic elements relating to the territory in their evolution over the centuries of the Middle Ages. The second part is entirely dedicated to the territorion and its evolution between the Xth and the 15th centuries; in two broad chapters the problem of the fortification and that of the development of rural lordships in relation to the transformation of the feudal system is dealt with. The last two chapters of the third part concern both the basic ecclesiastical organization, dioceses, parishes and parishes, from late antiquity to the late Middle Ages, and the social structures articulated in the complex communal activity between the tenth and fifteenth centuries.
