Here the author traces an outline of Italian literature from the Ravenna documents to the twentieth century, questioning certain well-established clichés. Among these is the marginal role of authors such as Iacopone of Todi and Cecco Angiolieri compared to the main path of highbrow literature, the function of baroque literature, the alleged return of religion in Romantic literature. All is carried out with a careful eye to linguistic evolution, co-master of the literary one.
