Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The rapid development of technologies has accompanied the emergence of a new type of society, which is fundamentally dependent on information and knowledge. In today's society, information takes on new forms compared to the past: in the economic field, information as a tool for production is transformed into merchandise; in the organizational field, information flows are today at the center of the production process; as regards employment, its distribution favors the sectors most connected to the introduction of information and communication technologies; in the cultural field, the availability of more information and the ease in acquiring knowledge modify life-styles and behavior. The essay reconstructs the origins and evolution of this concept, with particular attention to the implications for the labor market.
