Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The life of Elizabeth 'Sissi' of Wittelsbach unfolds against the background of a complex period both for the history of the Habsburg monarchy and for that of Europe as a whole. Ascended to the throne in 1854, in the midst of the period of the 'new absolutism', the wife of Francesco Giuseppe died in 1898 after the country, having emerged from the difficult trials of the period 1866-67, profoundly redefined its identity and its international location . In parallel, the European scenario undergoes transformations no less important. The rise of Bismarckian Germany and the relative decline of late Victorian Britain are just two of the political projections of a change that, far from being exhausted in this sphere, crosses all social, economic and cultural aspects, laying the foundations for developments that will mark the next century.
