Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] People very often share the positive events that occurred during the day (ie, capitalization) with their partner. Research has amply demonstrated that the way in which this is shared affects the well-being of couples. In particular, positive response styles increase relational well-being, while negative response styles lead to a decrease. A mechanism that could explain this link is the identity of a couple, that is the definition of oneself as part of a couple and the sense of belonging that derives from it. The purpose of this study is to test whether (a) capitalization responses (active-constructive, passive-constructive, active-destructive, passive-destructive) are associated with couple identity and whether (b) the identity of average couple the relationship between capitalization responses and relational well-being. 278 stable couples (average length of the relationship: 18 years) completed a self-report questionnaire containing scales aimed at measuring the perception of the partner's capitalization responses, the identity of the couple and the relational quality. The results of the analyzes carried out through the APIM model show that active-constructive and passive-destructive responses are associated with couple identity and that the identity of the couple mediates the relationship between active-constructive and passive-destructive responses and well-being relationship for both partners. In summary, perceiving the response of one's partner as interested and enthusiastic, or on the contrary distant and disinterested, following the communication of good news impacts on one's identity as a couple and consequently on relational well-being.
