Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Breast cancer is the most widespread female neoplasm and is the leading cause of cancer death. Its incidence, as well as the symbolic implications that it implies, make this pathology a privileged object of study both for medical and psychological sciences. Specifically, medical research has amply demonstrated the importance of early diagnosis strategies in fighting breast cancer, which - identified in early stages - allows a five-year survival in 97% of cases. For this reason, the National Health Service finances a prevention program that proposes a mammogram every two years to all women resident in Italy, aged between 48 and 69 years. Psychological research, for its part, has focused almost exclusively on disease (and its link with death) devoting little attention to the topic of prevention. In light of these considerations, the present study proposes a twofold objective: the identification of profiles / types of subjects who accept the invitation to participate in mammography screening and the identification of predictors of pre-screening anxiety.
