Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] We intend to show that, if correctly understood, ilmorphism is not an arbitrary construct of neo-scholasticism but an effective and synthetic expression of fundamental instances of Aristotle's thought. The term was coined in the bed of neo-scholasticism at the end of the 19th century. with the intention of naming a theory capable of counteracting mechanism and gnoseological subjectivism. Against the former it highlights that substantial change is not reducible to mechanical movement, against the latter that qualitative and substantial changes are real and not projections of the subject. The primary value of the concepts of hyle and morphe is metaphysics, and therefore their application is analogical, as evidenced by the fact that on the logical plane we can speak of matter as subject-substrate, while on the cosmological level we speak of prote hyle as a principle of potential based on which it is impossible to understand generation and corruption as absolute creation and annihilation. The corollary of the matterata matterata is also discussed, as a principle of individuation, a thesis rejected by many contemporary Aristotelists who attribute this role exclusively to the form. Sofia Vanni Rovighi's convinced resumption of iliamorphism in the Elements of philosophy is motivated by her correct understanding of Aristotle's theory and its implications.
