Abstract
The essay presents the figure of St. Ercolano, hermit bishop of the diocese of Brescia, and the diffusion of the ascetic experience in the rock of the mountain, in the high and middle area of Garda lake. Throughout the centuries the foundation was the subject of a religious presence that has crossed the Middle Ages, the Modern Age, until the twentieth century. In particular, the work analyzes the function of church of Maderno that has handed down the memory of Ercolano, preserving his relics in the medieval crypt, in the chapel of modern age and in the new parish, founded at the end of the eighteenth century. His relics have developed a strong devotion, expressed in the iconographic representations from different art forms.
