Abstract
At the end of the nineteenth century, the interest of the Holy See towards the Ottoman Empire was constant, both for the presence of numerous Catholic communities, and for the fear that the in the whole area of the Balkans and the Middle East, would spread influence of the Russian Empire. The essay traces the relationship between Rome and Constantinople, from the end of the 19th century to 1924, highlighting the main features of the "Vatican policy", an articulated action that intertwined diplomacy, religious and cultural initiatives, aimed at protecting Eastern Catholic communities and preserve the original Ottoman cohabitation space.
