Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] With Pius X, Latin America regains a new centrality in the priorities of the Holy See, even if the fundamental lines of its Latin American land policy are largely inherited from its two predecessors. To differentiate the action of Pope Sarto from that of Leo XIII and Pius IX, in addition to the personal propensity towards what historians have called "anti-temporal idealism", the changed political and ideological context of the continent intervenes, which makes it impractical for the pontiff of Riese the patrician road traveled by Mastai Ferretti and continued by Pecci. The introduction of the principle of separation between the State and the Church in most legislative systems in this sense certifies the failure of the efforts of the previous diplomatic season. At the same time, in the Vatican at the beginning of the century, which was substantially isolated internationally, a more realistic evaluation of the margins of maneuver available to pontifical diplomacy in Latin America also emerged.
