San Simpliciano come complesso funerario: tipologia e testimonianze epigrafiche

[Autom. eng. transl.] The extraordinary state of preservation of the original structures makes the Basilica of S. Simpliciano a fundamental testimony of early Christian architecture. Except for the façade and apse, rebuilt in the Romanesque period, and despite various renovations, its perimeter up to the roofing is still almost entirely that of the fourth century. Despite recent hypotheses proposing to assign it to the Constantinian age, it seems more likely to accept the local tradition that attributes its construction to Ambrogio. The contribution indicates the architectural peculiarities of the building, clarifies its function and discusses the late tradition that would originally have been dedicated to the Virgins.
