[Autom. eng. transl.] Starting from a field survey through participant observation and case study, the contribution focuses on the story of an Eritrean woman – Alganesh Fessaha -, founder of an NGO. According to the Weberian and Simmelian sociological perspective which focuses on the role of social action in relation to social macro-phenomena, history highlights one of the possible responses to questions coming from the historical context and time. In the specific case, it is a context of generalized and institutionalized violence, in which social systems impoverish the role of free and responsible action of individual social actors. Alganesh's action takes shape alongside what Z. Bauman would define as 'waste lives' due to wars, violation of human rights, strong social inequalities: human beings who are forced to undertake the dangerous migration routes between Africa (in particular, the Horn of Africa) and Europe. Alganesh's story highlights that the distance between the challenges of our time and the action of social actors is not so wide, above all where life calls into question the abstraction which, on the one hand, separates what in the living concrete is in relationship of reciprocity and, on the other hand, divests individuals of every distinctive feature, perpetuating the immobility to which the awareness of the extreme complexity of problems can lead by continually reproducing abstraction. Which, in turn, makes indifference and the elimination of the other normal. Faced with such complex phenomena that bring enormous issues into play, becoming attached to reality and acting responsibly are not movements unrelated to individual freedom which can contribute to the construction of humanly sustainable paths.
