Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The presence of a multicultural social context requires the structuring of specific intervention plans by health care, through the provision of ongoing care and assistance paths, to meet the needs of multi-ethnic users, respecting their cultural background. The aim of the study is to explore representations and experiences of Italian health professionals in the care of chronic immigrant patients. This contribution has provided for the preparation of a new survey protocol of the state of the art on the representation that health professionals have of the health of immigrant patients. This approach is included within a multidimensional model that has made it possible to thoroughly investigate the representations of health professionals towards chronic immigrant patients and their management of the disease. Specific semi-structured interviews were conducted for 54 health workers recruited in hospital and outpatient facilities in Rome and Milan. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed through a mixed qualitative-quantitative speech analysis. The results showed the prevalence of specific thematic areas, including the point of view of professionals on the relationship established between patients and operators; professional opinion on the chronic patient's relationship with his or her health condition and on the management skills of the possible consequences of the disease. The emerged thematic-specific vocabulary area then made it possible to heterogeneously characterize the representation of healthcare professionals, highlighting a rich and varied conceptual universe. The need for new intervention guidelines, calibrated for the ongoing assistance of such users, constitutes the new challenge for the functional integration of patients.
