Abstract
The multiplication of editions and critical contributions about Michelangelo’s poems has not been accompanied so far by a ‘scientific’ commentary, which could explain the stylistic elements and the links they maintain with the literary tradition and the historical, cultural and literary context.
The following pages are intended as a first contribution in this direction: they present an analysis of the madrigal Te sola del mio male contenta veggio (n, 246), as a model for a more extended commentary of the Rime. The introduction focuses on the themes that are developed in the text, on the main stylistic features and on the metrical form, not obvious in the first half of the sixteenth century; they are followed by a detailed analysis and a discussion of the autographs of the madrigal (which are proposed in an order different from Girardi’s critical edition).
