Abstract
The book is based on documents from Vatican, Ottoman, English, French and Italian archives. It is the first attempt to describe the eastern policy of the Holy See between XIXth and XXth Century. This is an important aspect of the international action of the Holy See, which, intertwining diplomatic and religious initiatives, tended to preserve the peculiar space of pluralism made up of the Ottoman Empire perceived by Rome as an important reef against the growing Russian influence in the Balkans and Middle East
