Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] During the First World War, Italy's position on nationality was marked by several ambiguities. On the one hand, in line with the 'Risorgimento' reading of the widespread conflict in much of public opinion, it accentuates the 'ideal' dimension of the confrontation that opposes it to the Austro-Hungarian 'prison of peoples'. On the other hand, its claims in the Adriatic - inspired by the traditional logic of 'realpolitik' - inevitably end up putting it in conflict with the variegated world of Slavic nationalism. The outcomes of this tension will manifest above all during the peace conference, hindering Rome's attempts to politically capitalize the victory achieved on the field and fueling a dangerous estrangement, as well as with the same Salvi, with the French, British and US allies.
