Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The purpose of this work was to verify the suitability of the radioisotopic technique for the determination of the 87Sr / 86Sr isotope ratio to be a robust technique for the geographical discrimination of origins of batches of tomato samples divided between berries, peeled, pasted and concentrated. Approximately 90 samples were analyzed, 58 from Italian areas (provinces of Ferrara, Parma and Piacenza and the Puglia Region), 25 from China (Xingjiang province) and 6 "blind samples". All the samples were prepared in a semi-liquid form for blending (berries, peeled etc) or used as they were (concentrates), freeze-dried and then treated in a mortar at a fineness of 1-2 mm. Subsequently they were subjected to the preliminary chemical treatments for the purification of the sample from the 87Rb isotope realized through passage on column with use of special resin which has the effect of favoring the retention of the Sr2 + ion, while the Rb + ion is eliminated. Then the desorption of Sr2 + ions is obtained by passing a concentrated solution of HCl which replaces the ions from the cation exchange sites. The acid eluate contains all the previously retained Sr2 + ions; using a volume of eluent equal to the volume of sample placed in the column restores the initial concentration. The sample is thus ready to be analyzed with the TIMS technique (Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry); the values of the 87Sr / 86Sr and δ ‰ ratio parameters are calculated with the help of the NIST isotope standard SRM 987 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, Gaithersburg, MD, USA); the determinations were all carried out in duplicate. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and a cluster analysis of a hierarchical type have highlighted the "robustness" of the method, which is able to highlight and separate in a statistically significant way two populations: the samples of the Italian range and the samples of the Chinese area, which show values significantly higher than the first for parameters 87Sr / 86Sr and δ ‰. The determinations on the "blind samples" have confirmed its belonging to the Italian range. This study, with the construction of a database, can be a useful tool for the food sector as these chemical indicators may be able to discriminate products from different geographical areas and currently the problems of industrial tomatoes require innovative tools for a better information for the consumer and more effective protection of the typical Italian product.
