Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The history of the "rediscovery" and "dispersion" of the cultural heritage of the Dunhuang area in the early decades of the twentieth century is reconstructed by some European scholars and travelers. Central in this context is the discovery of the so-called "hidden library" in a Mogao cave. It also provides a picture of the academic studies carried out on the Dunhuang manuscripts by Chinese scholars along the twentieth century. Today this location is the subject of renewed attention by the Chinese government which intends to relaunch its historical and cultural importance, within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiavite.
