Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] This paper aims to analyze the possible benefits of an environmental tax reform aimed at limiting the increase in temperature with taxes that promote the use of low carbon fuels. Not everyone agrees on the use of this regulation tool, underlining the critical issues that an imposition of this type could determine, in particular the possible economic impact on the present generation. However, pursuing sustainable development requires not to compromise intergenerational equity and to consider the social and environmental dimension as well as the economic one. The effects of the ongoing pandemic apparently make the need to promote an energy transition seem less urgent, due to the reduction in climate-changing emissions that has occurred and the recession that will help to contain emissions. However, these effects must not reduce the international community's commitment to reducing carbon intensity in energy production, which is fundamental for limiting global warming and promoting development that is truly sustainable.
