Abstract
The essay offers a brief review of the Italian contemporary literature on the theme of disability, which is growing quickly, probably because it fulfils the personal need of the authors to tell such a hard experience and, in the meantime, their will to sensitize public opinion. Barbara Garlaschelli's work is then examined, which deserves attentive analysis not only for the rich sequence of events that characterized her life, but for its literary qualities as well. Her autobiographical novel Sirena. Mezzo pesante in movimento will be analysed in particular, since it could represent a specimen of a wide group of books published in the last years.
