Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Can man know the singular (intelligere singularia)? The question, addressed by Riccardo in two questions (in q. 43 of the disputed Questions and in the Commentary on the four Books of Sentences, II d. 24 art. 3 q. 4), finds a very nuanced and not always univocal answer, expressed through a language marked by Aristotelianism, but which opens to Avicennian metaphysics. A knowledge of the singular, attached only to the properties of things, is possible despite the fact that formal structures (species own) are inaccessible to man in the current situation. Knowledge of the singular is intellectual, as evidenced by the awareness of knowing the singular. However, man knows the universal before the singular by order of nature: he does not get to know the singular nisi through universals. In fact, the intellect draws on the singular through the mediation of the representative imagination.
