Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Introduction. Violence in the workplace is a
public and occupational health problem, which can
cause, in addition to anxiety, stress and depression, also dissatisfaction
job, and intention to change jobs
(1-3). In the healthcare context, verbal violence is the type
of most common violence, and is defined as the use of words,
Tones or mannerisms that threaten, blame, or disrespect
to healthcare workers (3). There are several in the literature
meta-analyses investigating this phenomenon, but the
diversity of contexts and populations considered makes
difficult to use the available data to implement countermeasures
aimed at addressing this problem.
Goals. In consideration of the impact of this
problem for public and occupational health, the objective
of this umbrella review is to collect
meta-analyses aimed at investigating verbal violence on
workplace against healthcare workers, to examine
the global prevalence of the phenomenon and investigate its
Main characteristics.
Methods. A query was developed using the methodology
PICO, including MeSH terms for words
key: “health workers”, “workplace violence”,
“meta-analysis”. Following Preferred guidelines
Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-
Analyses, were searched in PubMed, Scopus and ISI Web
of Science relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses,
published in English until November 2022.
Data relating to authors, year, country, prevalence,
type of setting, population. One was carried out
quality assessment using the Risk Of Bias scale two
to Missing Evidence (ROBIS).
Results. 997 articles were identified in the three databases.
At the end of the screening process by title ed
abstract and full-text evaluation, 9 meta-analyses were included
on verbal violence. Most of the
meta-analysis included studies conducted in more than one country
(n=5, 55.6%), while two meta-analyses included only
studies conducted in China and only two Iranian studies. Five
studies (55.6%) included healthcare workers in general,
3 (33.3%) included only nurses, and one only residents
(11.1%). Where specified, healthcare workers
included were related to the hospital setting (n=3,
33.3%) and emergency departments (n=2, 22.2%). The prevalence
of verbal violence against healthcare workers
reported was 77%, while all other meta-analyses
(n=8) reported a prevalence between 50% and 75%. Everyone
the studies had a risk of bias assessed by the
low ROBIS scale.
Conclusion. This umbrella review highlighted
a high prevalence of verbal violence against operators
healthcare, which varies depending on the country and the type of setting
and occupational category. Greater recognition
of the problem could lead to local strategies and
appropriate international organizations to address it. Ensure a
Healthy working environment could safeguard the quality
of care and avoid wasting resources in the healthcare sector,
to ensure long-term sustainability and efficiency
end of the health systems themselves.
