Abstract
The Romans sincerely believed they were the most pious men in the world and\r\nowed their hegemony to their special relationship with the gods: so they felt in deep\r\ndistrust facing the Hellenistic world, where there was not any religious unity and\r\nwhere philosophical scepticism mixed with the cult of the rulers as gods: so religion\r\ncould not be an element of mutual understanding between the Roman rulers and\r\ntheir Hellenistic subjects.
