Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] In the years 2011-2013 the inter-intra-varietal relationships between the weight of the seeds and that of the fruits were studied, using different olive cultivars characterized by notable differences in the final weights of the olives (Arbeqina, Ascolana Tenera, Bella di Cerignola , Canino, Carolea, Frantoio, Galega Grada de Serpa, Gordal Sevillana, Kalamon, Leccino, Maurino, Moraiolo, Orbetana, Picholine, Sorani). The experimentation was carried out in central Italy, using the fruits taken, during the normal collection period (first part of November), from plants in good conditions of development, located in the varietal collection field of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Food and Environmental University of Perugia, in Prepo (PG). In the fruits the weights have been determined both fresh and dry of the entire drupe, of the pulp (epicarp + mesocarp), of the stone and of the seed. The data obtained were processed by calculating the average values and standard errors and subsequently used to calculate the linear regression and the coefficient of determination, in order to evaluate the relationship between the weight of the seed and that of the fruit and its components. The results obtained indicate that the final weight of the fruits of the different olive cultivars is positively related to the weight of the seeds and that all the components of the fruits (epicarp + mesocarp and endocarp) increase as the weight of the seeds increases and in inter-varietal tests than in intra-varietal ones. The relationships between the weight of the seeds and that of the fruit and its components were influenced by the seasonal trend and in particular by the availability of water. The seeds seem to have a greater ability to attract the assimilates than the fruits. The quantity of fruit produced by the plants per unit weight of seed seems higher in large-fruited varieties and this suggests that in these conditions conditions are created that favor a greater attraction of nutrients in drupes. However, this result must be the subject of further investigations taking into consideration also the production per plant, to verify that what has been observed is not due to a lower production load of the trees of the large fruit cultivars
