Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Researches with families of foreign origin have highlighted the many challenges these families face: among these, we focus here on the risk of a 'fracture' between family members who have made the migration and those left in the country of origin, a risk that threatens the intergenerational transmission of values and a sense of identity and continuity in family history (Scabini and Cigoli, 2006). In particular, we address the issue of intergenerational family relationships after migration and specifically the relationship with grandparents, hypothesizing that it may influence the adaptation of the new generations in Italian society, and especially of the so-called "second generations" (see Brambilla, Manzi, Regalia, 2010). The present study therefore aims to investigate the relationship of second-generation adolescents with parents and grandparents and the impact that these relationships have on the construction of identity and the inclusion in society of second-generation adolescents. The tools to measure the relationship with maternal and paternal grandparents and the amount of contact with them were developed after a previous qualitative study (Brambilla, Manzi, Regalia, 2010). Data collection was based on self-report questionnaires administered to 150 second-generation adolescents living in Italy. In the results, based on the quantitative analysis of the data, the different impact of the different types of relationships with grandparents on the adaptation and identity of the adolescents participating in the research is highlighted.
