Abstract
This article provides an overview of The Literature Centre in Fremantle, Australia and its activities in promoting children’s and young adult literature as well as nurturing local literature, writers and illustrators. The Centre holds exhibitions of original artwork by renowned illustrators and has a rich educational outreach programme for all schools levels. It focuses on young adult fiction, poetry and picturebooks, as well as providing an opportunity for aspiring young writers to take part in workshops and conferences. The article also includes a brief account of two of The Literature Centre’s 2018 exhibitions – original artwork for The Feather by Margaret Wild and Freya Blackwood and Cicada by Shaun Tan - and of its endeavours to promote the idea of the picturebook as multimodal object.
