Abstract
This contribution aims to investigate the relationship between reality and media by following the historical development of the debate on the different forms of realism, standing at the crossroads between Media Studies, Visual Studies, and Film Studies. Three phases will be considered: the first centred on ontological or technical realism, the second aimed at sanctioning the inaccessibility of the real (realytism) and, finally, the third open to a reformulation of realism (new realism or agential realism) in tune with current forms of experience, shaped by digital media and extended reality devices.
