Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] In the literary production of Ramón del Valle-Inclán, the theme of Carlism constitutes a leitmotif and the Sonatas do not deny the author's interest in this argument. If in the autumn Sonata and in the Sonata de estío Bradomín he presents himself as a Carlist, in the Winter Sonata his connection to the cause of Don Carlos plays a fundamental role in the story. In addition, the Winter Sonata also anticipates motives and reflections of the novels dedicated by the author to the question of the Carlist War. From this perspective, the Winter Sonata becomes a key work in the process of literary sedimentation that sets up a trajectory through which Valle-Inclán offers a subjective view of the political landscape of its time. In the winter Sonata, the writer faces history for the first time and deals with unusual amplitude until then that of the last Carlist War. The plot of the novel is composed of a small number of military episodes on which the love adventures of the declining and protagonist Donjuanesco are drawn. In addition, through the subtle interweaving of fictional and real facts and characters, the Winter Sonata is not limited to presenting a programmatic exposition of the Carlist ideology but offers a complete historical perspective of it. The purpose of this article is to identify the relationships that exist between historical reality and literary fiction in the Winter Sonata, underlining the importance of sources and context and their repercussions not only on the initial conception of the work of art but also in the way of representing and interpreting it.
